The Mercy Project / Inochi

Copyright © Seamus Murphy / VII Network

Curated by James Whitlow Delano, a photographer based in Tokyo, the book "The Mercy Project INOCHI" is a collection of images by notable photographers from the world, from freelance world and from photo agencies like Magnum or VII. Each of the 118 photographers was asked by James to generously donate an image inspired by their take on the word 'Mercy'. The book has been designed by Giorgio Baravalle at de MO Design, and published by Mado-Sha in Japan.

Importantly and the reason for the project theme, is that proceeds from sales of the book will be donated by James to a hospice foundation in the USA and to one in Japan for those suffering with terminal cancer, the same hospice which tenderly looked after James' sister Jeanne when she recently passed away.

The Coalfields of Jharia

The Coalfields of Jharia

With India's strongly increasing economic growth, the need for energy and thus the hunger for the dirty and supposedly cheap raw material coal will get bigger and bigger. The coal field Jharia, in the federal state of Jharkhand, is on the one hand India's biggest coal mining area and on the other hand also the area with the most coal seam fires.

Coal seam fires are not only one of the biggest causes of environmental pollution locally but also globally. For coal fires spout enormous quantities of carbon dioxide into the air, in India alone 1.4 billion tons a year. India has thus become the fourth biggest producer of greenhouse gas worldwide.

The Place Where I Am Not

Written by // Tina Remiz

The Place Where I Am Not

The Place Where I am Not is a personal documentary project exploring the dramatic changes that took place in my home country over the past three years.

Since joining the EU in 2004, rapid economic growth was followed by a deep recession that left imprint on every sphere of life, and my work is a document of different responses to the situation Latvians found themselves in.

On a more personal level, I explore the issues of migration and cultural identity, challenging the notion of the word “home”, as I return to a place where I no longer live.

Changing Tides: An Uncertain Future

A project by Stuart Matthews

Changing Tides: An Uncertain Future

I began working in Bangladesh in 2009, 6 months after Cyclone Aila struck destroying more than 700km (434 miles) of coastal embankments and wiping out thousands of homes, leaving over 40,000 people marooned on the embankments and forced to take refuge in shelters.

Land of the Gypsies

Written by // Yurian Quintanas

A documentary project by Yurian Quintanas

Land of the Gypsies

Each year during the last week of May, a small town from the French Camargue named Saintes Maries de la Mer is invaded with hundreds of caravans from across Europe to celebrate the pilgrimage honouring Saint Sarah ''La Kali'' the Patron Saint of the gypsies. Thus Saintes Maries de la Mer becomes for a few days in the land of gypsies, a fictitious land where you can breathe the essence of gypsy way of life. A nomad society that has been fighting against discrimination along its history, but that has never surrendered and has kept straight with its deep-rooted culture.

A life marked by constant movement, endowed with a sense of freedom impossible for our society to understand and a philosophy of life that has its roots in prehistoric times but is about to disappear at present.

Serenity

A project by Ben Sklar

Serenity

“We felt like we were dying,” she told me after we had barely known each other. She is Aimee Harris, a wife, a writer and mother of 3 children among many other things.

In the early spring of 2008 Aimee and her husband Jeff Harris, of Austin, Texas, decided they were fed up, they had reached their max. They were going to donate everything they owned, 2 18-foot moving trucks, to charity and travel the country to find a more sustainable way to live. They wanted to free themselves from the constraints of the mundane, routine everyday lifestyle in urban America that so many have become conditioned to call normal. The American Dream so many strive for had left them jaded and full of discontent.
